The Samburu National Reserve, conjoined with the smaller but no less attractive Buffalo Springs Reserve, lies a mere 320 kilometres from Nairobi.
This is true wilderness, and home to varieties of animals and birds rarely seen in other parts of the country. Here are to be found the Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, the Reticulated giraffe and Blue Shanked Somali ostrich.
Large herds of elephant are seen along the river’s banks which are much favoured by crocodiles and there are sightings of lion, cheetah, leopard and much else besides. Bird life abounds, a seeming anomaly given the harsh climate, but then nature in the wild is always full of delightful surprises.
ROOM & SUITE TYPES:
All cottages, rooms and suites numbering 61 in total,are decorated using the finest materials and fabrics. All accommodations have en suite bathrooms, some with baths, and all have private balconies overlooking the river.
There are several family rooms. One room has been custom designed to accommodate the special needs of physically challenged persons.
FOOD & WINE:
Lorokushu restaurant; The restaurant is designed in distinct African style overlooking the Uaso Nyiro river and can accommodate 120 guests. Diners are entertained by a Samburu flute player.
Crocodile bar; This bar is on the level of the river bank to allow for close viewing of crocodile, monitor lizards and sometimes elephant and leopard on the opposite bank. Towards sunset each day, bait is put out to attract crocodiles to within feet of watchers, but in conditions of perfect safety.
Vulturine bar; The bar is a reflection of Samburu's abundant and unique bird life and is opened through out the day and evening over looking the river.
FACILITIES:
Swimming pool; The swimming pool and bar serve drinks and refreshments throughout the day.
Dancing arena; This is set aside for dancing displays most afternoons at 14.30 by Samburu men and women dressed in their traditional finery.
ACTIVITIES:
Game Drives; Samburu Game Lodge operates a fleet of custom-built four-wheel drive vehicles with roof hatches designed for game viewing in comfort and safety. There are game drives and game drives and our driver / guides take pride in their intimate knowledge of the reserve (Masai Mara or Samburu) in which they operate. Driver guides are qualified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association (KPSGA) or are preparing for it.
Bird walks; These are taken every day at 10.00pm with the resident naturalist.
Sanburu Dancing; At 21.30 on evenings alternating with the showing of a wildlife video, a troop of Masai Morans (young men) entertain guests to a 30 minute display of traditional dancing.
Swimming Pool; This is located in an enclosed area shaded by flowering shrubs. It is provided with sun beds and a pool side bar serves drinks and snacks between the hours of 10.00 and 17.00. The swimming pool features a jacuzzi and game viewing deck overlooking the park.
